I posted this on R/interestingasfuck and was suggested to show it off here too. I made this from maple walnut and cherry, it took multiple glue ups, more then I could count. It turned out to be 13.5 X 18.5 x 1. 5/8

    Start woodworking, not wood-shop working.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 06:34 PM PDT

I spent the last 2.5 years buying tools and building a shed to house my workshop. Once complete, I started adding to my tool collection so I could build the best stuff. Then I started designing and organizing and building my workshop. Buying more tools, designing the best layout, more tools, better workbenches… on and on…

It wasn't until a month ago I realized I had built nothing but a shed and a workshop. I had built nothing of value.

So I started making things with what I had. Built some furniture for my kid, made a cutting board with my planer and clamps, and even built a 15' long keel for for boat and wrapped it in fiberglass.

Long story short - it doesn't take much to get into woodworking. Most of what I built wasn't necessary. I could have started 2.5 years ago with a circular saw, router, chisel, and a hand planer.

Moral of the story: start building things, not building what you think you need to make things. You'll either get creative, or find a justified need for a new tool.

Finished 10 of this. When I was just learning, it seemed to me that it was impossible to make 10 , but now it's not so hard.

Moved to Europe and do all my woodworking in metric now. Let me tell you, I do not miss having to add 3/8 plus 15/16. Metric is the way.
